Personal messages-

1.I sure wish Winston was here. I see the EG&G logo work everyday.

2.Psiclops, as you can see NIH is the primary source of funding for HGP
(formalized I believe by DNA co-discoverer Watson around 1990). But the key
is not defense but DoE. For example, DoE announced last Friday that via
Lawrence Livermore Lab, California and University of California are going to
start a HGP research center (~200 workers) in Walnut Creek, California. All
this funded by money from DoE. Object to assimilate medical/health gene id
discoveries and catalogue them for others as well as for DoD.

3. Pyramid, if you get a chance, relay the above info in number 2. to qwerty
exactly as stated and tell him that dt said read it very carefully.
Oh....and add "I'm not there."

mini LBS seg-

dt was called to a meeting with the senior air force officer that he'd met
in the Nevada desert---just the two of us this time. We met in Monteray,
California....sand again but of a more pleasant kind..... We talked for two
days........mostly about the insertion of the human genome idea.....but I
knew he was not a bio-oriented officer...more like Mission Control....I was
being coy and cool by telling myself don't just blurt out the question,
"O.K. where are 'We' hiding the flying saucers Chief?" (I will use "Chief"
for the time being for senior air force officer as much as I hated the word
for obvious reasons....)

He said that he wanted me to add to my responsibilities which may entail
some travel on a very short notice basis.....mostly to the South America
region...He told me that he is in charge of OUR retrieval teams....I wasn't
being too dense when I said, "..ah...retrieval of EBEs and craft?" He said
"Yep." I asked, "There are that many retrieval situations?" I got no
response.

He went on to describe some retrieval actions (yes plural) and the make up
of the various parts of the team and the team members themselves.....I was
thinking no big deal just go an get the item and return...and oh yes, this
has to be done quickly and quietly...yeah I knew that....you see I didn't
envision myself as a team leader. I thought I would be like a
biological/medical consultant. This was not to be the case.

What the Chief wanted emphasize to me was that it was not simply recruiting
technical experts. Even those I do recruit will be required to carry-out
other special tasks. I said, "Like what?" Well, he said like the one you
were about to perform on me and the junior air force officer when we all
first met each other. He said you know that the junior officer thinks that
you're just a crazy Vietnam vet don't you? I said good, "I'll keep him on
his toes then." The Chief only broke out with his laugh and said dt I think
you really are cruel, he continued to laugh........however the way he said
it made me stop smiling..........
